It’s not enough that consumers are paying over 4.00 per gallon for gas. Apparently companies other than Big Oil are jumping on the band wagon of sticking it to us with no Vaseline. American Airlines parent company AMR announced last week that beginning June 15, 2008 they would start charging $15.00 for the first bag checked and $25.00 for each additional piece of checked luggage. The new fee is charged both ways on round trips meaning your total checked baggage fee is $30.00 for the first bag and $50.00 for each additional bag. American Airlines is the first major airline to do this to offset fuel prices which means the other major airlines are waiting in the wings to see if us Consumers fall for this Okie Doke! If there was ever a time to lead a Consumer Rights protest it is today. American Airlines can not survive on Business travelers alone. We have to show American Airlines via the pocket book that we are fed up with their corporate antics.
Let me ask you a question: When our economy began spiraling, did you have the opportunity to tell your Landlord/mortgage Company that due to gas prices and food hikes you have to cut your rent/mortgage by 30% to offset the cost? I think we all should try that as an experiment and see how quick we are directed to the nearest Homeless shelter. What about going to your boss on Monday morning telling him/her you demand a raise effective immediately to offset gas prices. My point? It’s always you and me who have to adjust our budgets while big business simply increases prices in one area to offset another. Their seven figure salaries and life style have zero interruption!
You and I have to use our Consumer power and write, email or call American Airlines and let them know WE WILL BOYCOTT AMERICAN AIRLINES until they withdraw their baggage fee. That’s right I said it! Withdraw!
This is the only effective way to show the other airlines they should not follow suit or we will put them on blast too.
Scenario:
Round trip airfare to the Family Reunion for 2 adults, 2 children= $1900.00
Car Rental and Hotel Fee = $600.00
Misc. expense = $ 400.00
Adding an extra $320.00 for checked Luggage = Ridiculous
