I have to admit, I never gave the matter of waxing my Nani a second thought. By no means was it even a first thought. I always perceived waxing as something “other” people did. Growing up and in my adult life, this was never a subject among my peers.
My grooming routine consisted of keeping the bush from growing out of control and being too, well…bushy. Then I read an article on a waxing service called a “Brazilian”. I was fascinated to learn that a Brazilian was removal by waxing of all pubic hair, including hair in the anal area. Whoa! I instantly flashed back to one of my attempts at caving in to my curiosity. I was about 23 or 24 years old. With no encouragement or influence from anything and anyone, I shaved my Nani. Yep, I got me some body wash, lathered up and gave her a Telly Savales. After staring in the mirror for a good ten minutes and giving my work a thorough examination, I anticipated the return of my shroud. My Nani resembled five o’ clock shadow, felt stubbly, and the grow back period?!…Ugh!!! Let’s just say it was very, very, very irritating, literally!
The article featured actress, Vanessa Williams speaking candidly about the upkeep of her Nani. She was a Brazilian regular. The article also featured other Black celebs, which did the same. Women who look like me are waxing “down there”. Now waxing had my full attention. My interest in my Nani upkeep turned into an obsession. I researched it like a student studying for a final exam. I learned that strip wax tends to strip some of the skin along with the hair (painful), and Hard wax would be best for coarser hair texture. Also Hard wax attaches and dries to the root of each hair follicle allowing the convenience of one quick pull, no re-dos in the same area. After calling around and asking a bunch of questions, I gave one more try to making my Nani cosmetically appealing. While lying on table, legs wide open, Nani fully exposed, I imagined all the possibilities. Would I go Brazilian, the triangle, landing strip, or the cute little dot circle just above the lips. My first run I decided on the strip. The hard wax never let me down and my Esthetician completed her job in just a few pulls. The whole process took about 10 minutes and when I got up and looked in the mirror, the clouds parted, angels were singing, and light of heaven shined through. I couldn’t stop touching my smooth surface and looking at my landing strip. That was three years ago and I have been a front row seat fan ever since. I love the result of being bare down there cosmetically and hygienically. Every chance I get I talk to my fellow sista’s about waxing in an attempt to crush the myths and fears. I love the fact that I’m so damn sexy everywhere…literally, everywhere. Now I want to know your grooming routine! Holla at ya Gyrl!
